The cost-of-living crisis is devastating students and staff across the higher and further education sector.
This year, NUS Scotland’s Cost of Survival survey found 52% of students had skipped meals, 45% had gone without heating and 37% had considered leaving their courses due to lack of financial support.
We’re now past the tipping point. The £46million for colleges and universities, announced in December’s budget, was not enough to keep our education system afloat in the cost-of-living crisis. To now withdraw the funding altogether, which would have covered invaluable teaching, support services and staffing, is unjustifiable.
It’s only going to get worse. We are in the midst of a student mental health crisis, with the Thriving Learners survey finding that more than two thirds of students have reported low wellbeing. Student support services have been continuously cut with no long-term confirmed funding for mental health counsellors in colleges or universities for the coming academic year.
As the Minister for Higher and Further Education, and the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, I urge you to uphold your commitments to students across Scotland and reinstate the £46million lifeline to students and staff in the education sector.
I am Fighting For Students, are you?
