Dear Harpreet Uppal MP,
I'm
writing to you as a
constituent in Huddersfield
to ask you to support our campaign to abolish the landlord practice of asking for guarantors and
limit
rent up front
.
These practice
s
are
discriminatory, especially for students from deprived backgrounds, those estranged from their families, and international students. It
all-too-
often forces
vulnerable students
into unsustainable debt or homelessness.

Landlords have other means to protect against losses, such as tenant referencing and rent guarantee insurance,
which make requiring
guarantors unnecessary.
Housing costs take up a large chunk of
our
funds
as students
. The failure of maintenance funding to keep up with inflation has left the average student in England with just 50p to live on per week after rent and bills.
We urge you to support an amendment to the Renters Rights Bill to abolish guarantor requirements
, which will help to
create a fairer rental market for all students.
Thank you for your consideration.
